Pick a Challenge for Gamedev.js Jam 2023!

This year’s Gamedev.js Jam is offering six different Challenges for you to explore – from open sourcing your entry’s code, looking back at and reviving Flash, through Web3 alone or with a bit of Arcadian lore or Overlord universe, to Interoperability mixing the last three together.

They are all entirely optional, but the extra effort is rewarded with extra prizes. You can win cash, coins, NFTs, shop vouchers, or even a publishing deal! You still have time to consider joining, so let’s look at what each Challenge is offering.

Open Source by GitHub

Open Source by GitHub

Share your game’s source code on GitHub and you might end up in the top entries blog post after voting ends. The experts of this challenge are Michelle Mannering, Ewa Mazur, and Ania Kubów. The prize pool is $500 in GitHub Shop vouchers, so ten entries will be able to grab cool swag worth $50 each.

Flash Revival by CrazyGames

Flash Revival by CrazyGames

Get inspired by old Flash games in a chance to win 2750 EUR, with the first place getting 2000 EUR and a publishing deal on the CrazyGames platform. Experts looking at how well you revived a classic are Raf Mertens and Rafael Morgan.

Web3 by Game7

Web3 by Game7

Implement any decentralized technology to be able to qualify for 5000 USDC total, starting with 2000 USDC for the first place and wrapping with 100 USDC each for the places from 6th to 10th. No idea where to start? Check out the Web3 Game Dev Knowledge Base document. Experts judging entries in this challenge are Leon Do and Brett Cleary.

Arcadians by OP Games

Arcadians by OP Games

Invite Arcadians to your game and win from the prize pool of 1500 USDC and three Arcadians NFTs, with 1000 USDC sitting in the first place. It could be as basic as adding images of those Arcadians themselves, through tossing in the actual NFTs, to implementing Arcadia SDK with leaderboards and tournaments – up to you. What you submit will be judged by Paul Gadi and Taufik Sani.

Overlord’s Arena by Overlord

Overlord's Arena by Overlord

Similar to Arcadians – follow the Overlord’s lore and add Creepz NFTs to your entry any way you feel would fit the best (images of them alone should be “good enough”, but the more integration with the actual NFTs the better) to be able to win one genesis Creepz NFT worth around ~$2500. Experts are Joe Carnell and Dominic Smith.

Interoperability

Interoperability

That’s actually all three mentioned above mixed together: add Arcadians and any other NFT collection (Creepz, Nouns, Loot, you name it) to make your entry multiverse-worthy and have a chance to win 500 USDC along with more Arcadians NFTs. Your entry will be judged by Paul Gadi and Allan Patel.

Hosting with Flux Cloud

If you do aim to make a blockchain-related game don’t forget that Itch offers a limited capability for iframed entries, so if you want to connect a wallet you’ll need to do that on a dedicated hosting outside of Itch.

It could be as simple as GitHub Pages, shared hosting, VPS, or you could pick something more aligned with what you’re doing and go for Flux Cloud. Whatever you choose, make sure to point folks at it in the description of your entry if they are suppose to benefit from the decentralized features.

Carry on!

That’s all – the deadline is April 26th, so you still have plenty of time to finish your entry and pick on any (or all!) of the Challenges. Don’t forget to join our Discord (if you haven’t already) if you need any immediate assistance from partners or fellow devs.

Good luck and have fun!
