Game Off 2026 begins with the theme Shift

Game Off 2026 is under way! GitHub’s annual game jam returns for its fourteenth edition, with Shift as the theme. Development started on November 1st, and entries are due by December 1st, 2026, at 13:37 PST, which is 21:37 UTC or 22:37 here in Warsaw.

That gives you November to make something playable, whether you are joining your first jam or looking for an excuse to finish another small game. After Scale in 2023 and Secrets in 2024, there is plenty of room for another unusual interpretation.

What could Shift mean for your game?

The official announcement leaves the interpretation open. A shift could change a position, a role, a perspective, or the rules themselves. You can make that change the main mechanic, or use it to give a familiar genre a different setting.

Here are a few directions to sketch out. Imagine a shopkeeping game where you swap between the customer and the person behind the counter, with each side trying to complete a different task. Or a puzzle where you can move entire rows of a room, carrying both the player and the obstacles along with them. A delivery game could pass the same parcel between workers, each able to cross a different part of the map.

Try describing what the player actually does in one sentence. If that sentence needs three unrelated systems, there is probably a smaller version hiding inside it. Build enough to test the change itself, then decide what deserves another level. A theme is a useful constraint when it helps you choose what to leave out.

Bring the tools you already know

Game Off accepts any programming language or engine, and you can work alone or with a team. Browser games fit comfortably into that mix. If you took part in our Build it with Phaser challenge, this is another opportunity to use that experience on a new project.

There is no need to spend the first week choosing a completely different stack. A familiar renderer, asset workflow, and deployment process leave more time for the part players will notice: the game. Learning something new can also be the point of a jam, but choose the experiment deliberately and keep the rest manageable.

For examples of compact ideas, browse all 317 entries from js13kGames 2026. Game Off does not impose that competition’s 13 kilobyte limit, but the habit of making one idea work within a clear boundary travels well.

How to enter

Join the jam on itch.io, create a public GitHub repository for your source code, and submit the game to the jam before the deadline. Pushing your code to GitHub does not submit your itch.io entry. Leave yourself time to complete both steps.

The official FAQ allows templates, libraries, and reusable code, while asking that the vast majority of development happens during the jam. An open-source licence is encouraged rather than required. AI-assisted development is allowed, with disclosure when submitting.

Our Open Source challenge is a useful reminder to make a repository helpful to the next person opening it. Add a short description, controls, build instructions, and credits. A stranger should be able to tell which files make the game and how to run them.

Save time for players

Get a browser build onto itch.io early. Ask someone to open its actual page without your explanation, watch where they get stuck, and check the restart path as carefully as the first playthrough. A readable goal and a reliable retry button can do more for a jam entry than another unfinished feature.

Once submissions close, participants rate games in Overall, Gameplay, Graphics, Audio, Innovation, and Theme Interpretation. Voting ends on January 1st, 2027, at 13:37 PST, with results following afterward.

Until then, our Gamedev.js Jam 2026 winners offer another manageable set of games to explore. Pick a few, pay attention to how they introduce their controls, then join Game Off and start building your own interpretation of Shift!
